Flute + Tape
Ritual 1 (the first of a planned set of more than one) has its beginnings in a continuing conversation Alexis Letourneau and I have been in for a couple years. What is the place of the "untrained" voice in chamber music? Why does vocalist almost always equal soloist? I want to sing more, why don't I sing more? For this project, we decided to flip the usual orchestrational hierarchy: the accompanying track is composed entirely of Alexis' voice, and the solo component is a song written for flute. The piece was written for and premiered at a showcase concert at MASS MoCA, as a part of the Bang on a Can Summer Festival.
